Rochdale MP becomes Chair of Labour Friends of Palestine

simon head and shouldersRochdale’s MP Simon Danczuk has spoken of his pride at becoming Chair of Labour Friends of Palestine and argued that Parliament must not turn its back on the plight of Palestinian people.

Succeeding Andy Slaughter MP, Mr Danczuk said it was a great honour to lead the Labour movement pressure group that campaigns for peace and justice in the Middle East through the implementation of international law and respect for human rights.

“At a time when there is a huge amount of unrest in the Middle East and events in Libya, Bahrain and Egypt are grabbing international attention we should not forget the Palestinian struggle for justice,” he said.

Adding that in a week in which a Parliamentary report on the widespread detention of Palestinian children by the Israeli state highlighted the shocking and oppressive conditions that Palestinians were forced to endure, he said there must be no let up in the campaign for justice.

“Ed Miliband’s first speech as Labour leader made it clear that Israel must accept the Palestinian right to Statehood and our movement will continue to campaign for a two state solution.”
