MP to visit holy land to meet with Palestinian Prime Minister
Rochdale MP and Chairman of Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East (LFPME) Simon Danczuk is to pay a visit to the Holy Land this weekend.
He will go to East Jerusalem, Jordan, Hebron and Ramallah as part of his five day visit, and also meet with the Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority to discuss next steps to revive the peace process.
Commenting ahead of his visit, he said:
“Tensions in the Middle East affect everyone right down to the Rochdale motorist that has to pay high petrol prices due to instability in the region. It’s in everyone’s interest that solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are found and I want to see for myself what is being done on the ground to move this forward.”
Adding that he had been refused entry to Gaza by the Israeli authorities, Rochdale’s MP said he also wanted to take the opportunity to learn about other faiths during the Christmas period.
“I will be going as a Christian and as we approach the most important time for Christians I think it’s important to reach out to other faiths at a time when everyone wants to see peace on earth.
“The United Nations has recently awarded Palestine non member observer status and we have to hope this will strengthen their hands in peace talks to achieve a lasting solution to conflict.”
