MP meets Palestinian President

President Abbas

Rochdale’s MP Simon Danczuk met visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in London this week and reiterated his support for a two state solution between Palestine and Israel.

Mr Danczuk, who is chair of Labour Friends of Palestine, welcomed President Abbas on Monday night to a meeting of cross-party MPs to discuss attempts to revive the Middle East peace process.

“Securing a peaceful two state solution between Palestine and Israel is in everyone’s interest,” said Simon afterwards. “And the fact that America is pre-occupied with elections this year means that other countries like Britain may have to play a larger role in pushing peace talks. We need to put more pressure on Israel to stop their illegal settlement building, which is threatening the two state solution. They can't have peace and illegal settlements at the same time.

“The Middle East crisis affects everyone, right down to the motorist in Rochdale who is suffering because of high fuel prices caused by instability in the region.”
