Rochdale’s Member of Parliament, Simon Danczuk, recently criticized the Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies, for the new alcohol guidelines that the government have set.
In Parliament, the MP said: “There is an overwhelming scientific evidence base that shows the health benefits of moderate drinking—something to which I can attest. Does the Minister not agree that the chief Medical Officer should highlight those benefits more?”
The current guidelines state that both men and women should not regularly exceed 14 units of alcohol per week which equates to six pints of larger or six glasses of wine. These have been put in place despite there being significant evidence from around the world which shows that drinking alcohol can actually be good for your health.
