Fighting for Rochdale, Littleborough and Milnrow

Business Rates Reform

Business rates are a tax which have become completely out of touch with economic reality.

Extortionate rates that bare no relation to the ability to pay have been a barrier to opening new businesses in our towns and are one of the major reasons we now see so many empty shops on our high streets.

I have seen this for myself in Rochdale where some businesses are facing rates bills which are three times their rent.

I am campaigning for a thorough reform of the business rates system that will make it more fair, more logical and more beneficial for small businesses.

I am campaigning for:

  • Shifting the burden of taxation from smaller to larger businesses
  • Reforming the antiquated VOA to make valuation fairer and appeals easier
  • More frequent valuations
  • Greater assistance for struggling businesses to help keep them open
  • Greater local control over the proceeds of business rates

Manage a business where the rates are virtually equivalent to a years salary for a young person. Reducing rates could promote more employment
